Bourbon is an American whiskey – a type of distilled spirit made primarily from corn (maize) and named after Bourbon County in Kentucky. Bourbon must be made of a grain mixture that is at least 51% corn and is aged in new, charred oak barrels, giving it a golden brown colouring.
Bulleit Bourbon
Bulleit Bourbon uses only the highest quality ingredients and follows the 175-year-old recipe of Augustus – produced with a high rye content and proprietary grains and yeasts. Rare among bourbon producers, Bulleit Bourbon has its own Grain Division, which acquires distiller’s grade grains grown to Bulleit’s specification. The high level of rye content creates the dry, clean flavour and in true bourbon fashion, only limestone-filtered water is used.
Bulleit Bourbon is distilled and aged in small batches and stored in a single-story warehouse, which reduces inconsistencies in the maturation process. It is aged in American white oak barrels that are flame charred, giving the bourbon some of its colour and flavour, for not a drop less than six years – creating maturity and smoothness. The final, 90 proof product is formulated by mingling, not blending, two and sometimes three of the distillates to ensure consistency in the nose and taste.
McKenna
The Urban Bourbon, McKenna, was first produced in 1855 by Henry McKenna – a young Irish entrepreneur who immigrated to the USA to make his mark in the new world. Henry set up a grain mill in Kentucky and began to use the excess grain to distil whiskey. Because he strictly limited production to one barrel a day and focussed purely on quality, McKenna soon became the sought-after bourbon in progressive inner-city establishments of cities like New York and Boston.
Its unique difference is taste—McKenna Bourbon is double distilled, offering a well-rounded, full taste with an extra smooth finish. Today, McKenna is still the choice in urban centres around the world and is now available in New Zealand — for those socially savvy individuals who thrive on the city buzz.
Double Distilled. Extra Smooth.
Slate
Produced by the Slate Distilling Co. in Chicago, Slate Blended Bourbon is made by a method known as precision distillation, in which the master distiller has the advantage of computer-controlled technology to constantly monitor the process and distil the spirit exactly the way he wants. Copper columns and doublers are used to produce a high quality distillate, and computers enable the equilibrium at each plate to be checked and controlled every second. This precise distillation of the heart of the spirit lends strength, while blending lends smoothness.
After careful aging in charred new American white oak barrels, the final bourbon has a smooth oak character highlighted by vanilla and dried raisin top notes.
