Rum

Rum is a distilled spirit made from sugarcane by-products, such as molasses and sugarcane juice, by a process of fermentation and distillation. The distillate, a clear liquid, is then usually aged in oak and other barrels to give it the desired colouring. Light rums are commonly used in cocktails, whereas golden and dark rums are also appropriate for drinking straight
or mixed.

Our portfolio offers a great selection of international and domestic rums for every occasion.

Appleton Estate

Appleton Estate bottleAppleton Estate holds true to its 260 years of handcrafted traditions. Its rums are distilled using the small batch distillation method that has been handed down since the inception of the Appleton Estate. The pot stills at Appleton are unique to the Estate and impart a very distinctive character to our rums. This character is the hallmark of every Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum we make. It’s a slow, old-fashioned process but always well worth the wait.

Every bottle of Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum contains a unique blend of aged rums hand selected by our Master Blender, each carrying age statements that are certified genuine minimum aged rums. This means the rums have been aged in oak barrels for at least the number of years stated on the label.

Bacardi

BacardiIf you take yourself back to the 1860s, it is hard to imagine how anyone could have seen potential in a rough, harsh, local spirit named ‘Aguardiente’ (fire water). Yet a young Spanish migrant seeking his fortune in Cuba saw something so unique within it that he spent much of his life trying to unlock its potential.

Don Facunda Bacardi Masso was convinced that rum could be smoother, lighter and more refined, fit for the sophisticated palates of the Cuban middle classes raised on imported wine and brandy. This conviction led him to develop a series of ground-breaking innovations that revolutionised rum production.

The flagship of his work was Bacardi Superior Rum, the world’s first premium white rum. Bacardi Superior Rum has a subtle, delicate spirit, with flavours that balance perfectly when mixing with lighter ingredients – neither dominating nor disappearing.

Early bartending pioneers were inspired by Don Facunda Bacardi Masso’s new style of rum, crafting a whole series of innovative drinks from its crisp, clean and fresh taste. Having stood the test of time we now call them ‘Classic Cocktails’, and they are some of the best known drinks in the world.

Since its founding in 1862, the Bacardi Company has been owned and managed by the Bacardi family, the direct descendants of Don Facundo, while Bacardi Rum, the world’s favourite, has enjoyed over 300 individual awards.

Captain Morgan

Captain Morgan bottleIn 1654 a young Henry Morgan left his native Wales for the West Indies. He never looked back. A born leader, he quickly made Captain and became famous as a legal pirate or Buccaneer, defending British interests in the Caribbean.

His exploits on the high seas earned him a knighthood and by 1680 Sir Henry Morgan was a plantation owner and Governor of Jamaica. There he lived out his final days until his death in 1688. Centuries later he became the figurehead for a company that became as famous as the man himself – The Captain Morgan Rum Company.

Now the second largest rum in the world and owned by Diageo, Captain Morgan has six variants in its stable – many of which are recent additions from the last 10-15 years.

Coruba

Coruba Rum has been New Zealand’s favourite rum since 1967. It is a 100% imported Jamaican rum and comes in both a traditional dark rum style and a lighter golden style.

Coruba Original

Coruba OriginalCoruba Original classes as a grade darker than gold rum – aged longer, in heavily charred barrels. Coruba Original has a much stronger flavour than either light or gold rum, and hints of spices can be detected along with a strong molasses or caramel overtone. It is used to provide substance in rum drinks, as well as colour.

Coruba Gold

Coruba GoldCoruba Gold is made in a modern rum style with its golden colour created by ageing in small oak barrels. Coruba uses both pot and column still rums, and over 30 rum ‘marks’ are used to create the Coruba Gold blend. Coruba Gold is painstakingly infused with ripe and subtle scents of brown sugar, nutmeg and vanilla and is smooth and mellow with a full-body, medium-sweet and rich entry flavour and a long, full finish. Rich toasted flavours of honey, wheat bread and refined sugar will enchant the taste buds. The Coruba Gold taste is not what you’d expect from rum and is one of the most versatile and easy to mix sprits available. Whatever your favourite mixer is, Coruba Gold will go with it.
