Tequila

Tequila is a Blue Agave-based spirit made primarily in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, in the highlands of the western Mexican state of Jalisco. The red volcanic soil in the surrounding region is particularly well suited to the growing of the Blue Agave, and more than 300 million of the plants are harvested there each year to produce famous brands like Jose Cuervo.

But it did. Thirty seven years later in 1795 King Carlos IV of Spain transferred the deed to Jose Cuervo’s son – Jose Maria Guadalupe Cuervo – granting him the first official license to commercially produce tequila.

Jose Maria immediately built a distillery and began producing tequila – “the wine of the earth.” Soon other family members got involved in the business and began introducing methods and technologies instrumental in driving the spirit’s popularity in Mexico, the US and throughout the world. In 1873 the business became the first exporter of tequila and pioneered the use of bottles for tequila distribution in 1880.

Today, Jose Cuervo is revered as the world’s oldest and largest producer of tequila, accounting for more than half of all exports. The company has remained in the hands of Jose Cuervo’s descendants and is currently owned by 9th and 10th generation family members, who continue to produce every bottle with the same pride, care and quality established 200 years ago.

Made exclusively in Mexico from 100% Mexican ingredients, Jose Cuervo Especial is the best-selling tequila in the world and a globally recognised brand found in virtually every country.
