Our goal is to be an industry leader in sustainability.

At Lion Nathan, sustainability is a must-have, not a nice-to-do. We want to be here for a good time and a long time – which means we integrate sustainable growth practices throughout our business and engage our business partners to create a more sustainable supply chain.

We know that leadership status can’t be bought. It has to be earned, over time, with a commitment to doing the right thing for the long term and delivering growth that is both
environmentally and socially responsible.

Social Responsibility

Our products are a fantastic accompaniment to sociability, and when enjoyed in moderation can deliver wellbeing benefits. Whilst most people enjoy our products responsibly, we recognise the social costs of alcohol misuse in the community.

We believe alcohol misuse is fundamentally at odds with sociability and wellbeing – our reason for being – which is why we go to great lengths to ensure we do not contribute to the problem, but rather play a leading role in promoting a positive drinking culture.

To put it simply, promoting and supporting responsible consumption is a key strategy in achieving our vision of bringing more sociability and wellbeing to our world.

Community Involvement

We make a significant and measurable investment in our communities, providing at least 1 per cent of operating net profit after tax to a wide range of voluntary social and environmental initiatives. In 2009 that figure was more than $2.7 million.

By supporting programs that address key areas of alcohol misuse we work actively as part of the community’s efforts to change unhealthy drinking behaviour and have done so for many years.

In both countries we also undertake education initiatives that direct consumers to websites where they can find comprehensive information and advice on healthy drinking and the implications of misuse.

The BeDrinkAware logo (Australia) and Drink Responsibly logo (New Zealand) are placed on all our high volume stock keeping units (SKUs) and marketing materials – including TV commercials, billboards, print advertisements and in-market promotional materials – and act as a friendly reminder to consumers to seek information that will help them make responsible drinking decisions.

Workplace Giving

We provide our people with the opportunity to support the causes they are passionate about. Through the Lion Pride Workplace Giving Programme, our people offer direct support to 12 charities of their collective choosing on both sides of the Tasman. Every dollar given by our people is matched by the business, with more than $200,000 donated in 2009.

Environmental Responsibility

We embed a culture of environmental responsibility across our business, and are guided by our Environmental Policy – which is based on the core principle of Reduce, Re-use, Recycle.

We recognise that understanding the key environmental aspects and impacts of our activities, products and operations is the critical first step in managing them effectively. To do this we use a formalised review process that considers frequency, severity, existing control measures and stakeholder concerns. Review our progress in our latest Sustainability Report.
